Volunteer Spotlight
Volunteers are essential for the safe and effective running of swimming competitions, at all levels. At licensed meets the number of volunteers with certain qualifications are the requirement for times to be submitted to the Swim England rankings. These times are needed for entry into County, Regional and National events (and some open meets too!).
At our Club Championships we need a referee, a starter, two J2- or J1- qualified officials on strokes, one chief timekeeper (J1 in training) and nine timekeepers. This is all in addition to the army of volunteers on the timing desk, medal desk, team managing, announcing, running and marshalling. At open meets, we need even more qualified J1s!
As a club we always need more volunteers in the club to train as officials. Anyone over the age of 15 can train as an official, and no swimming experience is necessary. You would be supported through the process, buddying up with experienced officials as part of the training.
If you volunteer as an official, most events will provide you with lunch, drinks, and often travel expenses. You'll have the satisfaction of knowing you are helping grassroots sport and supporting the children in their swimming journey. If your child is racing you will save on paying spectator fees to watch them race - and it's much more interesting being involved than sitting on a hot balcony for 8 hours a day!
