The Masters Winter Regional Championships lit up the Blackpool Palatine Pool on Saturday, 21st February, as over 250 swimmers from 55 clubs dove into action. The atmosphere was electric, and the standard of competition soared—with no fewer than 10 British records, 2 European records, and even a world record shattered during an unforgettable day.
Team Trafford made a powerful statement, with its 49 swimmers inspiring teammates and spectators alike. Dan Mills blazed to a British record in the 35-39 age group 400m freestyle, touching in at 4:02.54. Louisa Zolkiewski was unstoppable, smashing the British Record in the 30-34 years 100m Backstroke with a time of 1:03.50—an impressive improvement over her Cheshire swim just weeks prior. She didn’t stop there, slicing the 50m British backstroke record down to an incredible 28.85.

Octogenarian powerhouse Neill Mackinnon made a spectacular entrance into the 85–89 age category this year, rewriting the record books in style. He stormed to new British records in both the 50m breaststroke (49.06) and 50m freestyle (34.21), then delivered the headline moment of the meet: a blistering 39.88 in the 50m butterfly. That swim didn’t just set new British and European marks - it shattered the World Record and made him the first person in history in this age group to break the 40‑second barrier.
There were standout performances across the board. Roy Barry carved six seconds off his lifetime best in the 1500m freestyle, finishing miles ahead of his Carlisle Open swim just a week earlier. Mark Cahill lit up the pool with a rapid 25.32 in the 50m freestyle, earning an impressive 658 age-adjusted points. Harriet Finn took on an extraordinary six individual events throughout the day, collecting five PBs and 6 medals in the process. Then came the returning Chris Knight, who somehow managed eight swims and eight medals in a near-flawless haul.

Trafford Masters once again proved their dominance, retaining the coveted ‘Top Club’ title. The team amassed a remarkable 71 golds, 32 silvers, 4 bronzes, and an eye‑catching 55 personal bests.

A special moment came with the appearance of young Arthur Malpass - accompanied by his dad, Chris - who became the youngest volunteer of the day and represented Trafford with pride. Events like this simply wouldn’t happen without a dedicated volunteer army, and the club extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who gave their time to make the meet such a success.
The Masters Regional Summer Meet returns to the same Blackpool venue on Saturday, 19th September - mark your calendars for another day of exceptional racing.
