TMBSC 2018-19 - What a Great Season

23 September 19

It has been another fantastic year for Trafford Metro Borough Swimming Club (TMBSC) under the leadership of Head Coach Craig Ward, and his coaching team, Bob Bolton; chairman and the committee. Swimmers from the Junior, Senior and Masters teams had a great season.

Training re-started in September 2018 quickly followed by Club Champs Sprint Meet in November. The event saw swimmers set new Club records. Megan Hughes, breaking the Girls Junior 100 Metre Freestyle record by almost two seconds. Megan also broke the Ladies Open 50 Metre Butterfly. Jack O’Brien, breaking the Boys Senior 50 Metre Breaststroke record. Jack also broke the Men’s Senior 200 Individual Medley record. Also congratulations to record breakers; Rachael Banks, Emily Conway and Nikhil Thacker.

In December James Guy, British Olympian and former TMBSC swimmers ran a swim camp for Trafford swimmers at Sale Leisure Centre. A great event; lots of knowledge shared, inspiration and encouragement.

In February Trafford Metro competed in Cheshire County Championships, with a strong group of swimmers, winning several finals and medals. Congratulations Louisa Zolkiewski Helen Sadler Abi Cheetham Megan Hughes, who became Cheshire women medley and free relay champions 2019. Trafford Masters were top club at February Regional meet.

The Cheshire Championships were followed by TMBSC winning the Manchester & District final with a great team performance in March.

Off to the sun in April to Fuerteventura for a one week swim camp in preparation for the North West England Regional Championships 2019. Time well spent as TMBSC swimmers competed in finals winning several medal. Megan Hughes regained her championship Gold in the sprint 50 front crawl and James Rollaston became the double breast-stroke champion of the 50 and 100m. Both secured British and English national qualifications. TMBSC Masters men competed in the 4x200m relay and came third in the final. A good preparation for the European Masters in May. The ladies relay team; Megan, Abigail Cheetham, Louisa Zolkiewski and Helen Sadler also came in third in the ladies final. The younger ladies relay team also did great, and Ben Davidson gained silver and Nikhil Thacker won bronze.

In May the Trafford Metro team took part in a great swimming event to raise money for the Mind charity. 100 swimmers from different clubs swam 50m each and broke the Guinness World Record by more than 3mins. TMBSC continued the good work. This time 228 swimmers swam for 24 hours and raised an incredible £4000 for the Macmillan Cancer Fund. Well done again to everybody who took part; in the water and those helping poolside.

In June the Masters 4x200 team broke the long course European record, and in July two club records were broken at the Club Championship Distance Meet. Well done to Rachael Banks in the Girls 400 Freestyle and Jack O’Brien in the Boys 400 Individual Medley. Trafford Masters were also top club at the July Cheshire County meet

The end of the season competitions concluded with the British and National Summer Championships. Well done to Megan Hughes on a great season and finishing the season as GBs’ eleventh fastest in the 50 front crawl. James Rollaston competed in the England Nationals final 50m breast-stroke and well done to Laura Head who won bronze medals in the 50m and 100m breast-stroke Welsh Nationals.

At the Masters British Championships TMBSC had a great set of results. Several gold, silver and bronze medals and the 4x200m freestyle team broke the European record.

Well done to all the swimmers, and thanks to the dedicated parents, coaches and poolside helpers.
