Record medal hauls for Trafford Masters swimmers

29 October 18

At the Masters National Swimming Championships held over the weekend at Ponds Forge Sheffield, Trafford Metro Masters swimmers excelled with a record haul of medals. Thirty five swimmers made the trip across the Pennines for the 3-day event. By Sunday evening they had bagged 21 gold medals, 20 silver and 15 bronze medals. With a further 26 4th-6th place finishes this was one of the club’s best ever results at the blue riband event of the year. To cap it off 56 year old Alec Johnson broke a British record in the 200m Backstroke with a time of 2minutes 25.15seconds. Alec was the men’s top performer in terms of results with 4 golds and a silver in individual events and a further gold and silver in relay events. In her first full masters event (Masters swimming starts at age 25 and swimmers compete in 5 year age blocks thereafter), Louisa Zolkiewski was the top performing female with 2 gold medals, a silver and a bronze. Louisa also went on to help her relay team mates to 3 further gold medals and a silver. The weekend was littered with fantastic performances. Club Vice President Neil Mackinnon, at the age of 77 won all four of his races and the evergreen Club President John Anderson gained 4 silver medals at the sprightly age of 81. At the other end of the age scale Adam Frost representing the Club for the first time as a senior age group swimmer, aged 23, collected 5 bronze medals just missing out on a further two. Club head coach 33 year old Craig ward won bronze in the 50m butterfly and freestyle events gaining a lifetime personal best time of 25.78 for the butterfly. There were numerous other personal best times, which for Masters is no small achievement, according to Masters Coach and Club Chairman Bob Bolton. Helen Sadler showed her versatility for sprinting and distance swims as she collected silver medals for the 50m 100m and 200m Freestyle events adding a gold in the 400m event. In the challenge event of the year Jonny Giles and Mark Redman aged 36 and 48 respectively had been in training for their head to head in the 100m Freestyle since early January. There has been much light hearted banter to brighten up training between these two and on the day Jonny just edged out Mark but only by 1.03 seconds. Nev Barton succumbed to a shoulder injury and man flu but still managed a gold and two silver medals as well as organizing all the relay teams as well as the ‘all you can eat Chinese buffet’ on Saturday night – otherwise known as the ‘herding cats’ events! The strength and depth in the squad was clear to see. Coach Bob again ‘It’s such a privilege to coach these guys and see the commitment and effort they put in all year round. They all deserve every success and more besides’. Bring on 2019 when we can do it all again.
