2017/18 - What a Great Season !

22 July 18

Thomas New with the gold medal for 50m front crawl and bronze for 50m backstroke

It has been one of the most successful seasons so far under the leadership of Trafford Metro Borough Swimming Club (TMBSC) Chairman Bob Bolton and Head Coach Craig Ward, and his coaching team.

In April swimmers trained hard at a swim camp in Fuerteventura. Training started at 06:45, led by coaches Craig and Jo Bolton.

This was a great preparation for the 2018 North West Regional Open Age Championships, held at Manchester and Liverpool Aquatics Centres in May. Only five years ago TMBSC had seen just a couple of swimmers qualify for the regional championships, this year saw a record number of TMBSC swimmers compete. The swimmers hard work was rewarded with one gold, two silver and two bronze medals. The biggest results went to James Rollaston for getting a full set of medals. In the 50m breaststroke heat James beat his personal best, but knew he had more, and when the final came he truly prevailed and smashed his time by 0.7s to win by over one second in an impressive 31.81 seconds. A time which has put him in the British Championships, in August. James also secured silver in a very fast 100m front crawl and in the 100m breaststroke claimed bronze. Another fine performer was Megan Hughes in the 50m front crawl with a very impressive time of 27.21 seconds; winning a silver medal.

In the 2018 North West Regional Youth Championships Ben Davidson won gold in the 200m breaststroke at the end of a long day of racing. A phenomenal 50m breaststroke heat, and a fantastic final earned Ben a silver medal. Shaving an impressive 1.5 seconds off his heat time; 38.13 seconds. Indecently; Ben has broken James Guy’s (Olympic Silver Medalist) TMBSC club records in breaststroke.

In the 2018 North West & North East Regional Open Water Championships at Salford Quays, Trafford Metro swimmers were: Ellie Conway, Michael Boyle, Shayne Wilsonand Tiago Lawrie. Who all won North West Regional medals for each of their age categories.

TMBSC also competed well in district and club meets. Second top visiting team at the Retford Open Meet in Sheffield and winners of the Manchester and District Round 3&4 team event, both led by Coach Dan Walsh.

In the 2018 European Down's Syndrome swimming championships Thomas New won a gold medal for 50m front crawl and a bronze for 50m backstroke in Southampton. He was competing for England against swimmers from Russia, Estonia, Sweden, Spain, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

The swimmers continue to train hard for the July and August 2018 Summer National Championships. Qualifiers are British Championships; Megan Hughes and James Rollaston. Swim England Nationals; Reece Cambage-Hughes, Joseph Keeley and Jack O’Brien. Welsh Nationals; Laura Head and Hannah Head. Swim England Open Water; Ellie Conway, Michael Boyle, Shayne Wilson and Tiago Lawrie.

All the best to our National swimmers, and well done to all TMBSC swimmers.
