Skills Development 1 – Neptune 5
Age and Training Sessions
- Ideal age 6-8 maximum age 8
- Attend 1 session a week
Training Criteria
- Swimmers should be able to demonstrate a correct streamline push off from the wall
- Kick 25 metres of each stroke (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Front Crawl) with or without a kickboard
- Perform 25 metres of drill for each stroke (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Front Crawl)
- Swimmers should regularly be able to perform skills including sitting dives, sculling and somersaults in the water
- Perform a front and back float using streamlined positions – holding each position for 5 seconds
- Punctual to most sessions
- Show basic lane discipline
- Coaches’ discretion based on talent identification and long-term potential

Age and Training Sessions
- Ideal age 6-9 maximum age 9
- Attend 1 session a week
Training Criteria
- Swimmers should be able to demonstrate a correct streamline underwater push off and perform a minimum of 5 metres dolphin kick (and an underwater pull-out for Breaststroke)
- Perform 25 metres of drill for each stroke (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Front Crawl)
- Swim 100m in less than 3 minutes using Front Crawl
- Complete a short set (e.g. 8x25m) on a prescribed turnaround time (e.g. 60 secs)
- Swimmers should be able to perform an effective approach, rotation, and touch for Frontcrawl and Backstroke turns and an effective approach, touch, rotation, and touch for Butterfly and Breaststroke turns
- Perform a standing dive from poolside and a backstroke start from the wall into a streamlined position underwater
- Punctual to most sessions
- Show basic lane discipline
- Coaches’ discretion based on talent identification and long-term potential

Attend 1 session a week
Training Criteria
- Perform 25 metres of each stroke (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Front Crawl) starting with the correct push off, underwater phase and transition
- Swim 100m in less than 2 minutes 30 seconds using Front Crawl
- Complete a short set (e.g. 8x25m) on a prescribed turnaround time (e.g. 60 secs)
- Perform 25 metres of drill for each stroke (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Front Crawl)
- Swimmers should be able to perform an effective approach, rotation, and touch for Front Crawl and Backstroke turns and an effective approach, touch, rotation, and touch for Butterfly and Breaststroke turns
- Perform a standing dive from poolside and a backstroke start from the wall into a streamlined position underwater

Age and Training Sessions
Ideal age 8-10 maximum age 10
Attend 2 sessions a week
Training Criteria
- Perform 50 metres of each stroke (25m Butterfly) starting with the correct push off, underwater phase and transition
- Swim 100m in less than 2 minutes 15 seconds using Front Crawl
- Complete a short set (e.g. 4x50m) on a prescribed turnaround time (e.g. 90 secs) aiming to complete each repeat at a set pace (e.g. 55 secs)
- Swim a 100m Individual Medley with correct push off from wall, underwater phase and transition to stroke with legal touch turns
- Swimmers should be able to perform an effective approach, rotation, and push off for each stroke turn
- Perform an effective racing dive from poolside and starting block & a backstroke start from the wall into a streamlined position underwater
- Punctual to most sessions
- Show basic lane discipline
- Coaches’ discretion based on talent identification and long-term potential

Training Criteria
- Perform 50 metres of each stroke starting with the correct push off, underwater phase and transition
- Complete a short set (e.g. 2x100m) on a prescribed turnaround time (e.g. 2 minutes 15 seconds) aiming to complete each repeat at a set pace (e.g. 1 minute 45 secs)
- Swimmers should be able to perform an effective approach, rotation, and push off for each stroke turn
- Swim a 100m Individual Medley with correct push off from wall, underwater phase and transition to stroke with legal touch turns
- Perform a legal and efficient turn on each of the four strokes and for each of the three individual medley turns from 10m in to 10m out from the wall
- Punctual to most sessions
- Perform a track start and a backstroke start using a starting block
- Show basic lane discipline
- Coaches’ discretion based on talent identification and long-term potential
