Upcoming Galas 2010

Each year as a group we target a number of Galas. In addition to these further masters competitions can be found on the ASA web site.

The galas we have done in the past or are considering at this stage for 2010 are listed below

January

On the first Saturday in January at Shrewsbury, a few of the masters have done this in the last two years, but we will probably miss it in 201 as we are not race fit after Christmas.

February

Rotherham meet at Sheffield Ponds Ford, we have been told 2010 comp has been cancelled, we will wait and see.

April

Midlands Region, 23/24/25th April 2010. A top class meet at Leamington, 3 day event with long distance swims. A good opportunity for a weekend away.

May

Either Yorkshire meet in Scarborough or Carlisle Meet,

NB:- Scarborough gives the opportunity for an over night stay at the seaside There are plenty of B&Bs to suit all requirements

June

GB’s depending where it is held determines if we target this meet

(The venue changes each year in theory should be in England in 2010 having been in Wales in 2009)

July

North West Region Saturday Third of July 2010 Palatine Pool Blackpool, this is a definite for all to attend. We won the team trophy at the inaugural meet in 2009 and need to retain it.

September

Halton club meet, held in Widnes, A good meet, no real distance to travel, they have a social after.

September/October

Arfon Club meet. Held in Bangor. Probably not targeted as clashes with Halton and Cheshires

October

Cheshire sprints, usually held at Macclesfield as a two – three hour evening meet,

This a definite for all to attend, we won the team trophy in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 and need to retain it. Very convenient to get to and a traditional curry after.

October

Nationals usually held at Sheffield, the swimming equivalent of playing at Wembley. If you want a fast swim this is the place to do it. Again about 20 or so compete at this premier event and most stay the night

November

Etwall Eagles Club meet, we went for first time in 2008, an excellent meet to end the season. We won visiting team trophy.

Trafford Metro swimmers triumph at the British Masters Championships 2008

The Manchester Aquatic Centre hosted this years British Masters Championships where Trafford Metro dominated. They reinforced their position as one of the top UK clubs for Masters swimming with a medal haul of 25 gold, 20 silver and 10 bronzes. There were some exceptional individual performances in what became a fantastic team effort. In the 45-50 age category Alec Johnson proved his dominance in the butterfly events with 3 golds to complement his silver in the 100 metre freestyle. At age 67 Neil Mackinon showed his class in the sprints picking up gold in the breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. Neil also took silver and bronze for the 100 and 400 freestyle respectively. 54 year old Neville Barton bagged a brace of golds for 50 breaststroke and freestyle along with silvers in the 100 metre events for the same strokes. Nev also picked up a bronze for the 1500 freestyle. At the younger end of the club Neale Sayle aged 26 collected 2 backstroke golds and 2 silvers for butterfly and freestyle while Jonathan Giles won gold and silver for 200 and 400 freestyle. Richard Symons also won gold in the mens 30-35 age category for 800 freestyle. At the sprightly age of 71 Club President John Anderson won 3 silvers and a bronze while Alan Rowson Ashley McEwan and Graham Sadler collected bronzes. Not to be left out the ladies also put in a magnificent performance. Neville Barton's wife Rachel picked up 3 golds for the backstroke, butterfly and freestyle sprints in the 60-64 category and world champion Jill Jones dominated the 400 and 200 freestyle events in the 50-54 category and collected silvers for the 100 butterfly and freestyle. Helen Sadler added the 100 metre backstroke gold to her 3 silvers and a bronze for the butterfly sprint in the 35-40’s. Debra Harding showed great endurance in the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle events picking up silvers for the 45-49 category. Moira Hampson grabbed a backstroke sprint silver while her 27 year old daughter Sara took the 100 metre backstroke bronze. Also the relay teams created a new European record in the Mixed 200+ medley where Nev and Rachel Barton and Helen and Graham Sadler were victorious. Graham, Neale Sayle, Alec Johnson and Steve Harding also set new British records in both the Men’s 160+ medley and Men’s 160+ Free. The Club bagged a further 2 relay golds and 1 silver. A full roundup of results can be seen at http://asaftp.sportcentric.net/sports/masters/results/2008/gbma08/ Lots of swimmers produced new personal best times proving that age need not get in the way of improving sports performance.
